Halloweensie Contest 2017

One of my favorite writing challenges is the annual Susanna Leonard Hill’s Halloweensie Contest. This year’s challenge: write a children’s Halloween story in 100 words including “shadow”, “monster”, and “candy corn”. SO FUN.

Here’s mine!:

Trick AND Treat by Jennifer Kaap (100 words)

One Halloween, my family and I were watching scary movies and munching on candy corn. Suddenly, I saw a shadow move.
“Someone’s in the house!”
“Aww, is Little Sister sc-sc-scared? Should we turn off the movie?” my brother teased.
“Am NOT scared! Never mind.”
Minutes later, I heard a faint noise sounding like “gonna eat…”
“Anyone hear that?”
“I did!” Dad paused the movie.
The noise grew louder. “GONNA EAT…”
We screamed as a monster stomped in.
“He’s gonna eat US!”
He came closer, roaring, “GONNA EAT…” He reached out. β€œ…. YOUR CANDY CORN!! TRICK AND TREAT!” He grabbed the candy corn and ran.

  1. Hey Jennifer,

I enjoyed your story. Nothing like a good scare on Halloween. Good thing they had candy corn to FEED THE MONSTER! Good luck in the contest.

  2. And this is why I don’t watch scary movies–because that’s when monsters come to steal your candy corn! Very sweet. πŸ™‚

  3. Thank you all for reading my story and for the kind comments. I enjoy writing and reading these contest entries. I’ve been extra busy; I can’t wait to steal away some moments to read fun stories!

  4. Nice job drawing out the spooky suspense, Jennifer! Maybe next time big brother will listen when little sister says she hears something… if he wants to keep his candy corn! πŸ™‚ Thanks so much for joining in the Halloweensie fun!
