Five Easy Steps for Sharing Books with Your Toddler

Today, I went over to the Burbank Adult School to talk with parents of two-year-olds. I talked with them about all the wonderful library materials and programs that are available at the library FREE of charge:) I also shared with them Five Easy Steps for Sharing Books with Your Toddler.

Five Easy Steps for Sharing Books With Your Toddler

1. Pick the best time
A time when you and your toddler are in a good mood. Snuggle up and make this a quality time to spend together.

2. Pick a special spot to read
Find a place free from distractions (such as TV, radio or computer) where you and your child can both be comfortable reading together.

3. Show your child the book
Point to the pictures and talk naturally and cheerfully. Talk and have fun. Encourage your child to interact with you and the book.

4. Watch what your child does
Let your toddler play with the book if he wants to and stop for now if he gets upset.

5. Share a book with your toddler everyday
Even just a few minutes a day is important.

Where has my little dog gone? and Birthdays!

Welcome back to storytime, everyone!!! After a couple of weeks off, Toddler Tales is “back in business”.  It’s so good to see familiar smiling faces again. This week, we did a storytime about birthdays and doggies, too. We also handed out our new Winter Rhyme sheet with new rhymes and songs for this season. I also told everyone about this new website blog where you can find out what happened at storytime every week. This will be a good resource to remember favorite songs and stories. Extra rhyme sheets and coloring sheets can always be picked up at the library. In the future, I would also like to use this website to share some early literacy tips as well as sound recordings of traditional rhymes and stories. Enjoy! I hope to see all my friends soon Friday mornings over at the Burbank Central Library…

Little Red Riding Hood

This month, the library introduced a new program: Super Saturday Stories. Last Saturday, I presented a storytime for kids in grades K-3 that highlighted the favorite folktale, Little Red Riding Hood. We had a blast recreating the traditional tale by having the children do a readers theater presentation, reading variant books and poems, storytelling, and watching a video of a Bugs Bunny version. I hope to do another “Super Saturday Stories” program in the future and play with other fairy tales and folktales. Also: be on the lookout! I will be posting a podcast version of Little Red Riding Hood in the near future…and hope to be posting monthly podcasts of favorite traditional stories.
